I lay down color and then with text or images in mind, I begin painting over, scratching in, covering and sanding, deleting and adding, looking for balance. Isn’t this what we do all day long? We organize the things and people, memories and thoughts in our lives. Where do we put them? Albums, drawers, shelves, smart phone address books, journals… I’m the kind of person that wears the shirt on the top of the drawer; if I can’t see it, I tend to forget it exists. My small paintings, with their questions and thoughtful statements, are ways for me to avoid losing ideas in drawers and bins or the depths of a diary. “

Ceramics has been a hobby of mine for many years now.  What I find most fascinating about the art is the ability to create something functional from a lump of mud.  There is something very raw about the process that can take my mind away from the overly chaotic world we live in.

Most of my pieces are food and dishwasher safe!  Bowls, cups, plates, bottles, salt shakers all in a variety of shapes and glazes.

Blending theatre and art to become a Scenic Artist came naturally after double majoring in them at Doane College, in Crete, Nebraska.  Painting sets, drops, and floors for theatre and television, such as the Oprah Whinfrey Show and Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, can be very rewarding.  I’ve done so for over fourteen years in Chicago, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Nebraska.  I’ve worked with some amazing designers helping them realize their designs.  But doing what you love for someone else during the day can exhaust you for your own work.  Even with this exhaustion, I missed painting and would occasionally do a piece here and there.   After a long hiatus from painting for myself, I decided to dust off the easel and seriously get back to it.  In December 2010 a couple of my friends and I rented a storefront here in Chicago, where I set up shop.  It was a tiny room in the back, thus Back Room Studio was born.  We’ve recently moved to a temporary location, but the easel is up, and I’m back at it.
